Houston: Christmas at the Salvation Army

I am blessed! By Aiswaria Koshi

BTC Volunteers at the Salvation ArmyThis has been my best Christmas ever!! When I initially signed up for this my intention was to give, but today more than I gave I received. I received tremendous amount of love, a true pure love that surpasses all understanding. Today has changed my life. And I will tell you why in just a second. As I was greeting them and talking to them, there were a couple of men and women I asked “how are you?” They were cold and shivering and definitely hungry, but their reply was “I am fine, I am blessed.” That really touched my heart… I understood how rich these people are… They are rich in their spirit. They are not poor because they have a great fortune in heaven every time they give God glory, inspite of their circumstances.

Houston: Help the Homeless Collection Drive

Love. Generosity. Hope. By Maushmi Savjani

“It is in the shelter of each other that the people live.” Irish Proverb

Every single words of this beautiful quote rang true for me as I participated in the collection effort to benefit the Healthcare for the Homeless Houston (HHH) this holiday season. I may never meet those who poured their hearts out when presented with an opportunity to give and those who received these gifts, but I feel connected to everyone who somehow got to be a part of this wonderful happening.

I knew about HHH and Dr. David Buck, M.D., the founder of HHH, has been a huge inspiration to me ever since I heard him speak at the Compassion and the Art of Medicine lecture at Baylor a couple of years ago. Inspired by his experience working with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, Dr. Buck has worked tirelessly to develop medical and dental clinics for an indigent population in Houston. In 2001, he started HHH whose mission is to promote health, home and dignity for the Houston’s homeless through accessible and comprehensive care. This holiday season, it was our great fortune to have had the opportunity to participate in building healthy foundations for change in the lives of homeless men, women, and children with gifts that we collected through the toiletry drive. Below is the list of items we collected:
